Union Election Win Rate Hits 25 Year High

Charlotte, NC, May 24, 2010.

2009 saw unions winning 68.5% of all representative elections (that is, where employees chose whether or not to be represented by a union), the highest winning percentage in 25 years.  However, unions appear to be picking their battles more carefully; the number of representation elections held dropped by 20% from 2008.  Unions were particularly successful in representation elections at smaller companies, winning 70% of elections at companies with less than 50 employees.  Industries in which unions were able to win representation elections at least 50% of the time included manufacturing, mining, transportation, utilities, and construction.  While overall membership in unions continues to decline, they continue to aggressively seek to expand their membership as a top priority.
